Alejandra's Journey with Asociación Agroecológica Meraky
Alejandra’s story is one of passion, dedication, and a deep-rooted commitment to the environment. Holding a degree in tourism, she is the founder of the Asociación Agroecológica Meraky in Ahuachapán, El Salvador. Her journey with RAÍCES EL SALVADOR and the Colibrí Program has been pivotal in shaping her vision and driving her mission to create sustainable change.
Professional Growth and Community Engagement
Alejandra’s experience with the Colibrí Program has been transformative. During her internships with RAÍCES EL SALVADOR, her volunteer work at the Agricultural Summer School, and her participation in the Leadership Course, she connected with mentors and peers who have significantly contributed to her professional growth. “Working with young people is essential,” she says. “They show incredible commitment not just in agriculture but in any endeavor that can enhance their quality of life.”
Through these interactions, Alejandra has learned the importance of mutual growth. She values teaching young people about environmental stewardship but also recognizes the importance of learning from them. This philosophy led her to establish the Asociación Agroecológica Meraky, a collective of six young individuals focused on fostering sustainable change for the environment and society.
Advocating for Environmental Protection
Alejandra’s deep concern for nature drives her initiatives. She emphasizes that the well-being of our planet is intrinsically linked to human survival. “If we do not care for the planet and protect the environment, it will degrade, and climate change will cause more severe impacts globally,” she warns.
She believes in empathy towards nature, urging people to put themselves in the place of a tree, for example, because they too have life and play a crucial role in sustaining it. Alejandra argues that raising awareness about the importance of the environment is not just the responsibility of young people but of society as a whole. “The more people understand this, the easier it will be to mitigate the negative impacts we are causing.”
Building a Sustainable Future Together
Alejandra calls for collective action in tackling environmental issues. “I know that the world cannot be changed overnight, but we can contribute a little every day so that this change can take place,” she states with conviction.
Her work with Asociación Agroecológica Meraky is a testament to this belief. The organization aims to inspire and empower others to contribute to environmental conservation and to create sustainable opportunities within their communities. Through education, hands-on activities, and community involvement, Alejandra and her team strive to make a lasting impact.
