From Tradition to Transformation

Carlos Agreda’s Path to Sustainable Farming

Carlos Agreda, a committed and visionary farmer in El Salvador, has been a pioneer in implementing Water Smart Agriculture (WSA) practices in his community. His story is an inspiring testament to how change can lead to positive and sustainable results in agriculture.

Before adopting conservation practices, Carlos followed traditional farming methods, such as burning crop residues and applying herbicides. However, he faced constant challenges like soil erosion, nutrient loss, and high production costs. But everything changed when he decided to try something different.

With the support of the RAÍCES EL SALVADOR program, this farmer began implementing soil and water conservation practices on his land. One of the main strategies was incorporating cover crops, like Canavalia, which not only improved soil fertility but also controlled erosion and reduced weed growth.

The results were impressive. Carlos’s plots started to show a lush green cover, reflecting soil health and the effectiveness of the new agricultural practices. But the most remarkable impact was economic: he was able to significantly reduce his production costs, leading to greater profitability for his family. "Before, on a 1 hectare plot, I would spend $800 to farm. Now, with these practices, I spend $400," Carlos proudly states.

In addition to economic benefits, he also saw improvements in the quality and quantity of his crops. Thanks to the conservation practices, he was able to secure food for his family and earn extra income by selling surplus produce in the local market.

But Carlos didn’t stop there. Firm in his conviction of the benefits of WSA practices, he became an enthusiastic advocate, sharing his experience and knowledge with his neighbors. "We’ve proven that it works. Where Canavalia is planted, we see better production. And where there isn’t any, we see deficiencies," explains Carlos.

Thanks to the leadership of Carlos and other farmers like him, the community gradually began adopting good practices, transforming the agricultural landscape and improving food security in the area. "We have moved from tradition to progress and knowledge," says Carlos with a smile. "Now we know that with these practices, we can improve production. Thanks to RAÍCES, Tierra Saludable Ameyalli, and Cáritas for their unwavering support."

Carlos Agreda’s story is a powerful reminder of how innovation and collaboration can drive positive change in agriculture and people’s lives. His commitment to sustainability and his leadership spirit are an example to all those seeking a more prosperous and equitable future in the countryside.
