Andrea Rodríguez is a young woman from San Lorenzo, a small rural town in western El Salvador where daily life is closely tied to the land. At just 19 years old, Andrea experienced a turning point that not only helped her grow personally but also led her to become a role model and youth leader in her community.

Agriculture has always been part of Andrea’s life. Her family, like many others in the region, has worked the land for generations. While she was familiar with traditional farming methods, she had a strong desire to learn new practices and envision a different future for her community.

In 2022, she joined the Agricultural Summer School organized by RAÍCES EL SALVADOR and the Colibrí Youth Steering Committee—an experience that opened her eyes to conservation agriculture, a topic she had barely heard of before. Through hands-on learning, she discovered practical, sustainable techniques like maintaining ground cover and avoiding the burning of crop residues. Though simple, these practices made a big impact. Andrea brought the knowledge home, and together with her family, they began applying what she had learned on their own land—with encouraging results: healthier crops and a cleaner environment.

Crossing Borders, Building Connections

As Andrea got more involved in agriculture, she had the chance to participate in international youth camps with young people from across Central America. These experiences allowed her to learn about other cultures, build friendships, and strengthen her passion for agriculture. She realized that young people play a critical role not just in farming, but in shaping the future of their communities.

Andrea soon became part of the Colibrí Youth Steering Committee, where she took on greater responsibilities. She helped lead activities and embraced a shared leadership model, where every young member—regardless of experience—had a voice and a vote. This approach taught her the value of teamwork, listening, and inclusive decision-making.

Overcoming Doubt, Leading by Example

Andrea’s path hasn’t been easy. She’s faced skepticism from adults who didn’t believe young people could lead. She recalls being told she was too young to manage an agricultural project. Instead of backing down, Andrea used these moments to fuel her determination—and prove that youth can, in fact, lead meaningful change.

Today, she remains deeply committed to agriculture and youth empowerment. Her message to other young people is simple and powerful: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. There are always opportunities for those who dare to dream and work hard for their future.”

Looking Ahead

Andrea’s story is just beginning. She’s eager to keep learning, share her knowledge, and most of all, inspire other young people in El Salvador and beyond. She believes that the future is in their hands—and together, they can create lasting change.
